What is it About God and Fashion…

September 14, 2024

In light of current events, I felt that my next column had to reflect both the nature of the situation while remaining authentic to myself.

“As I watched people leaving church, I was amazed at how they looked. What is it about God and fashion that go so well together?” Spoken by the iconic Carrie Bradshaw. I remember hearing those words and immediately pausing. It’s not everyday that a reference this powerful is made in a mainstream television show.

In this scene, Carrie Bradshaw passes by a church in New York City as service finishes and people begin to disperse. She is amazed at how wonderful these churchgoers are dressed, and almost surprised at how fashionable they appear to be.

Upon hearing the iconic line, my first thought was this: It’s not the clothes that are beautiful, it’s the people wearing the clothes. Let me explain. In this age of social media, I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “Jesus glow”. A phrase popularized through platforms like TikTok and Instagram, in which people share their testimonies with the world. This glow is not literal, but rather a newly perceived radiance in a person’s appearance after accepting Jesus into their lives. Now you may be asking yourself what on Earth this has to do with Carrie Bradshaw. Simply put, God and fashion go so well together because faith creates a glow from within that radiates outward.

However, this radiance shouldn’t stop at one’s appearance, but rather extend to one’s actions. In times like these, when hate and sadness seemingly spread like wildfire, it has been a goal of mine to not succumb to this wickedness. Instead I urge us all to be the light in the darkness and the love amidst the hate. There is so much uncertainty in this world but I am 100% certain about one thing, being kind will never ever go out of style.
