Is it cute or just on sale?

September 08, 2025

We’ve all been there. The big “BOGO 50% off” sign that catches our attention as we stroll through the mall. After promising ourselves we were only shopping for essentials, somehow clothes are now draped over our arms and shoulders as we wait in line for the dressing room.

Now we’re in the tiny room, with the awful lighting, and practically no AC. One by one you try on the clothes you impulsively picked up after seeing the bright red “SALE” tag. The cheetah print top, on sale for 12$, that you think will go perfectly with that skirt hidden in your closet from 3 years ago. Then you try on this little black dress, 7$, that would look great if you hemmed it slightly at the waist, adjusted the shoulders, and made it a tad shorter. Now you have a mound of clothes that you have to put back on the hangers, and you’re asking yourself if you even liked them at all.

Now comes the decision-making process. “Do I really love this top? Did that dress even look good on me? Do I already have something similar at home?” You end up at the cash register, $200 down, with a whole bag of clothes you didn’t even like. They ended up in the back of your closet for the next 2 years, and you walked out with a major case of shoppers remorse. The crazy part…we never learn our lesson, and will be drawn in by that sale sign every time.

It’s so easy to fall victim to the cycle of consumerism, purchasing and purchasing so much that we lose sense of what we even like. So the next time you want to swipe your card, ask yourself, is it cute, or just on sale?
